The aim of this project was to create a space that felt like it had been made by the very people that use it. It needed to feel fun, playful and a little bazaar but also tackle a few difficult spatial problems which were causing people to mill around outside instead of coming on in. With only a couple of weeks to work with, and two days to set everything up, I got to work op-shopping up a storm, trying to find the most weird and wonderful things I could. The Basement’s essence is about grass roots theatre, trying new things and not being afraid to be different, so it was really important to me that I designed the space to fit with this philosophy. A lounge area was created to provide a ‘nooks’ for people use, in what is a rather unconventional theatre foyer layout. The walls were covered in numerous old painting and trinkets and the lighting was altered to create a softer, more intimate setting. This space will never be complete however, as I encouraged the owners to continually add new things and play with the space so that it really would feel like their own.
